How to Participate in the Berachain V2 bArtio Public Testnet

June 18, 2024 written by 01NODE

On June 9th, Berachain šŸ» launched its public testnet V2, bArtio. 01node is pleased to announce our active involvement as validators on the Berachain testnet. Having participated in the Berachain V1 testnet and being staunch supporters of the chain, we are now dedicated to the V2 testnet for the network. We eagerly anticipate contributing to the chain’s execution and success.

Introducing bArtio

bArtio utilizes BeaconKit, a framework developed by Berachain, for building modular L1/L2 blockchains. bArtio stands as the premier L1 blockchain beyond Ethereum, boasting support for cutting-edge standards such as EIP-4844 and EIP-4788. With full SSZ encoding and CometBFT for single slot finality.

Key Features:

  • Full Unmodified EVM Client Diversity: Seamlessly operates across Geth, Erigon, Nethermind, Besu, Reth, and EthereumJS.
  • Optimistic Payload Building: Ensuring efficient and secure transaction processing.
  • SSZ Encoding: Providing enhanced provability and security.
  • Proof of Liquidity: Now live and streaming BGT block rewards to pools across the network!

Berachain Testnet V1 vs V2

Berachain’s V1 testnet (Artio) was constructed atop Polaris, tightly integrating EVM execution with Cosmos consensus. However, the evolving demands of the ecosystem, particularly regarding transaction volume and engagement, underscored several limitations inherent in this architecture.

In response, the Berachain Foundation undertook a process of iteration and re-architecture, culminating in the development of BeaconKit. With the introduction of Berachain’s V2 testnet, the initial challenges encountered in V1 have been effectively addressed, resulting in the establishment of a stable and highly efficient network.

Unlike V1 validators, who exclusively operated the Polaris client, V2 validators now utilize the BeaconKit client for consensus alongside any EVM execution client (such as Geth or Erigon). This modular approach enables the specialization of functionalities, allowing the execution layer to leverage EVM innovations while BeaconKit delivers a customizable and high-performance consensus layer.

Main Changes from V1 to V2

In addition to the technical changes with BeaconKit, the economic design of Berachain’s native tokens has evolved. The following table highlights the main changes between V1 and V2:

Some significant points to note:

  • Economic redesign, with $BERA replacing $BGT for validator activation.
  • Elimination of slashing risks for $BGT delegators.
  • Transition to an EVM-identical execution environment, ensuring seamless compatibility.

Key Benefits:

  • Enhanced utility for $BERA tokens.
  • $BGT adopts a purely economic role, governing PoL and native chain incentives.

How to Participate in the Testnet

Step 1: Select the “Settings” option on your MetaMask wallet -> “Add a network” -> “Add a network manually” -> add the Berachain Bartio chain:**

Step 2: Faucet:

Step 3: Interact with dapps including:

The launch of bArtio is an important step in preparation for the mainnet platform. With the new version, the project continues to focus on developing the Proof of Liquidity (PoL) consensus mechanism, which helps balance profits between validators and various other components in the ecosystem, including users and applications. As a result, Berachain V2 can rapidly expand liquidity while better protecting the economy. šŸ»
